Bioclear versus Crowns and Veneers
Traditional crown preparations remove about 76% of the tooth. Bioclear’s minimally invasive technique saves more healthy tooth structure and lessens the risk of future root canals or snap-off fractures. As we age, crowned teeth can require extraction later. Bioclear offers an innovative option to avert this outcome. Bioclear is the best option for closing black triangles – the dark space between two teeth and the gums – without shaving the teeth down for porcelain veneers.
The Bioclear method has modernized the technique for composite solutions.
Crown Preparation: Crowns require dentists to remove an average of 76% of the tooth structure before the procedure
Veneer Preparation: Veneers require dentists to remove an average of 47% of the tooth structure before the procedure
Bioclear Preparation: Bioclear allows dentists to conserve healthy tooth structure
Why Patients Choose Bioclear
- It’s stronger and longer-lasting. The typical longevity of a composite restoration—like certain cavity fillings—might be two to five years. Bioclear restorations typically last fifteen to twenty years or more.
- It looks natural, youthful, and healthy. Bioclear restorations are finished with what we affectionately call the “Rock Star Polish.” The polishing is done wet, using water and a special slurry, keeping the temperature down and thus maintaining the integrity of the restoration. The polishing mix itself is made of safe, food-grade pumice. The polish is powerful enough to create a shiny finish while gentle enough to maintain the integrity of the restoration.
- It conserves more of your natural tooth structure. Traditional restorations end at the gumline, often creating ridgelines that, over time, can irritate and inflame the gums. Bioclear restorations start below the gumline. Preparations refer to reading a tooth (or teeth) for restoration. Even today, dentists remove all existing enamel to prep for porcelain veneers. Bioclear preparations only call for removing unhealthy tooth structure: it inherently conserves more of the healthy, original tooth.

How does Bioclear® Work?
Bioclear® works by selectively removing diseased portions of teeth and injecting composite with compression, eliminating the need for shaving down teeth required for installing crowns.
Does Bioclear® work for everyone?
Bioclear® could be an alternative to crowning, however, it varies person to person. Let me evaluate your situation to see if Bioclear® is a good fit for you!
Why should I get Bioclear instead of a traditional crown?
Most dentists are trained to apply crowns to protect cracked teeth. Crowns require the dentist to remove 76% of the tooth’s top, leaving a nub. A crown procedure reduces the tooth’s size until it’s small enough to sit under a shell of porcelain that holds the cracked sections of the tooth together.
What’s the difference between Bioclear and a traditional filling?
Traditional fillings go “in” the tooth, eventually leading to a cracked tooth. Bioclear, on the other hand, goes “around” the tooth with a combination of engineered cavity preparations and the patented Bioclear Method.
A dentist told me I needed a crown for my cracked tooth. Can I get a Bioclear Overlay instead?
Many teeth we would have previously crowned can now be treated with an overlay. With a quick photo and x-ray, we can tell you if your tooth qualifies for an overlay instead of a crown.
Does insurance cover BioClear?
Bioclear is not covered by insurance. Dr. Peña will provide an estimate that reflects the complexity and number of teeth involved in your case.
Why doesn’t every doctor use Bioclear?
The Bioclear Method is gaining popularity and is now taught in several dental schools. Major changes in dentistry and medicine often take many years to reach all doctors. It also takes passion and dedication to become a Bioclear provider. Bioclear-certified doctors, such as Dr. Peña and their assistants, complete extensive training and studies through a Bioclear Learning Center.
